Start with how ChatGPT works

ChatGPT is a cloud service. When you send a message, it travels to OpenAI's servers, a very large model answers there, and the reply comes back. That is not a flaw. It is how a model of that size can exist at all. It also means that every conversation is, by design, data on someone else's computer, governed by their policies.

Many of the alternatives you will find are the same design with a different logo: another cloud model, another set of policies. If privacy is the goal, swapping one for another changes the promise, not the architecture.

What changes when the model is on the phone

There is no account. A cloud service needs to know whom to bill for each message. A model on your phone does not, so nothing asks for your email.

Your personal data can be used without leaving. The assistant reads your calendar, reminders, photos, and health summaries as tools, on the phone, and shows a receipt for each thing it does. If a later step would send any of that off the device, for instance to a cloud model you chose to connect, it asks first and names the destination.

The price structure changes. With no per-message cost to cover, the assistant can be free without limits, and a single purchase covers the extras. There is no subscription.

What you give up

Be clear-eyed about this. A model that fits in a phone is smaller than the models behind ChatGPT, and those models are better at long research, essays, specialised knowledge, and sheer breadth. Orvena's model is very good at what people actually ask an assistant on a phone: logistics, drafting, summaries, reading an image, getting something done. When you need more, you can connect a cloud model with your own API key, and the app asks for consent per provider. The default stays private; leaving it is a choice you make for a specific request.

A different job, not just a different model

ChatGPT is a place you go to think and write.
